A wave of shock and distress has gripped a family in Himachal Pradesh after Aryan Chandel, a 23-year-old Indian student from Kandrour village in Bilaspur, went missing in Germany on June 15, 2025. Aryan was last seen swimming in Lake Starnberg, a popular destination near Munich, where he vanished under mysterious circumstances.
In a tragic coincidence, a 32-year-old man also drowned in Lake Starnberg on the very same day, raising further alarm about water safety at the lake and intensifying the mystery surrounding Aryan’s disappearance.
Aryan Chandel is a promising student who completed his early schooling in Ghumarwin and pursued a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from UIET Shimla, under Himachal Pradesh University (HPU). In September 2024, he fulfilled his dream of studying abroad by enrolling in a one-year Master in Management diploma at the EU Business School in Munich.
Known for his discipline and intelligence, Aryan was also physically active and a capable swimmer, according to his friends and family.
On what was supposed to be a relaxing Sunday, Aryan joined friends for a swim in Lake Starnberg, a scenic yet deep lake in southern Germany. Witnesses report that Aryan entered the water and then disappeared. He has not been seen since.
Disturbingly, another 32-year-old man drowned in the same lake that day, which has drawn increased scrutiny from local authorities and the media. While that individual’s body was recovered, Aryan remains missing.
Despite intense efforts from German rescue teams, including divers and boats scanning the lake, Aryan’s whereabouts remain unknown.
Back in Bilaspur, Aryan’s parents are shattered. “We just want our son back. That’s all we ask,” said his father, appealing for broader help.
The family has contacted the Himachal Pradesh government, which has requested urgent intervention from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The Indian Embassy in Germany has been notified, and diplomatic channels are being used to pressure German authorities to intensify the search.
Indian students and friends of Aryan have launched awareness campaigns using hashtags like #FindAryanChandel and #MissingInGermany. His classmates from UIET Shimla and the Indian diaspora in Germany are urging more people to share his story to keep the pressure alive.
