Assam Bids Tearful Farewell to Zubeen Garg in Hometown Kamarkuchi

Assam’s beloved singer and composer Zubeen Garg was laid to rest on September 23, 2025, at Kamarkuchi village, Sonapur, with full state honours. After a second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College Hospital, his family brought his mortal remains to the site. Priests chanted Vedic hymns under a white flower-adorned canopy, while Assam Police personnel carried his casket and performed a ceremonial gun salute.

Several prominent leaders attended the final rites. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, Pabitra Margherita, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and other officials offered floral tributes, many kneeling in respect. Their presence showed Zubeen’s influence as one of Assam’s most iconic cultural figures.

His last journey started from Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, where lakhs of fans queued under the scorching sun. The procession then moved to Kamarkuchi.

He gained national recognition with hits like Ya Ali from Gangster (2006), but stayed deeply connected to Assam. He used music to celebrate and preserve local traditions.
