Early Life & Education

Arshad Warsi was born in Mumbai to Ahmed Ali Khan (popularly known as Ashiq Hussain), an Urdu poet and musician who later adopted the surname “Warsi” after becoming a follower of Sufi saint Waris Ali Shah. His early years were not easy — he was orphaned by the age of 14 and had to work to sustain himself.

He studied at Barnes School, Deolali, Nashik, but dropped out after the 10th standard due to financial struggles. To survive, Warsi worked as a cosmetics salesman and in a photo lab before discovering his true passion: dancing.

At just 21, he won the prestigious Indian dance competition and later represented India in the 1992 World Dance Championship in London, winning fourth place in the Modern Jazz category. This success encouraged him to open his own dance studio, Awesome, and later form a troupe. Interestingly, this troupe introduced him to his future wife, Maria Goretti, who was then a college student.

Entry into Films & Early Career (1990s)

Before making his acting debut, Arshad assisted director Mahesh Bhatt in Kaash (1987) and choreographed for Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993).

In 1996, he got his big break when Jaya Bachchan offered him the lead role in Tere Mere Sapne, produced by Amitabh Bachchan’s ABCL. The film was a commercial success and marked his entry into Bollywood. He went on to feature in films like Betaabi (1997), Hero Hindustani (1998), and Hogi Pyaar Ki Jeet (1999), which brought him recognition.

However, the late 1990s and early 2000s were challenging, with many of his films underperforming at the box office.

In 2003, Arshad Warsi’s career changed forever with Rajkumar Hirani’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.. His role as “Circuit,” the loyal sidekick to Sanjay Dutt’s Munna Bhai, became iconic. He reprised the role in Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), winning the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role.
