In one of her many duties as a Duchess, Kate Middleton engages with the public on important topics.

While many aspects of royal life are onerous, it can be a true privilege to help make the world a better place.

Duchess Kate delivered the keynote speech for The Forward Trust’s “Taking Action on Addiction” campaign.

While speaking to help launch her patronage’s project, she lent her voice and platform to this important cause.

This is a long-term campaing that aims to improve awareness and understanding, tackle misconceptions, and enable people to seek help.

This is the ideal time to launch an initiative like this.

Addiction Awareness Week is now, spanning from October 18 through October 24.

Duchess Kate thanked addiction survivors who shared their personal stories with the audience.

“Addiction is not a choice,” she affirmed.

Kate added: “No one chooses to become an addict.”

“But it can happen to any one of us,” Kate warned.

She reminded the audience: “None of us are immune.”

“It is all too rarely discussed as a serious mental health condition,” Kate lamented.

“And,” Kate continued, “seldom do we take the time to uncover and fully understand its fundamental root causes.”

“The journey towards addiction is often multi-layered and complex,” she commented.

“But, by recognizing what lies beneath addiction, we can help remove the taboo and shame that sadly surrounds it,” Kate emphasized.

“As a society, we need to start from a position of compassion and empathy,” Kate affirmed.

She explained that we must reach a position “where we nurture those around us, understand their journey, and what has come before them.”

Kate also acknowledged how many of the factors that can contribute towards addiction and relapse were exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis.

“The pandemic has had a devastating impact on addiction rates,” Kate acknowledged.

“And families and children are having to cope with addiction in greater numbers than ever before,” she added.

Kate cited that there are more than just relapses. New addiction struggles have emerged.

“We know that over one and a half million people across the U.K. who did not have substance misuse prior to lockdown,” Kate began.

She continued: “May now be experiencing problems associated with increased alcohol consumption.”

“Around 2 million individuals who were identified as being in recovery, may have experienced a relapse over the past 18 months,” Kate added.

Despite those worrisome statistics, Kate expressed that she holds on to hope.

“I have had the privilege of meeting many incredible people,” she noted.

Kate described them as people “who have lived through the harsh realities of addiction.”

“Through their own hard work, and with the help from communities and charities, such as The Forward Trust,” Kate began.

She continued: “Lives really are being turned around.”

Kate declared: “I fully support The ‘Taking Action on Addiction’ campaign to improve awareness and understanding of addiction.”

“The campaign will show us that, not only do many people recover from addiction,” Kate stated.

She then proclaimed: “They can go on to prosper.”

“We can all play our part in helping this work,” Kate told the audience.

“By understanding, by listening, by connecting,” Kate encouraged.

“So that together we can build a happier, healthier, and more nurturing society,” she announced.

That is a very worthy cause and it is wonderful to see the Duchess use her platform to end addiction stigma.
