Shriya Saran was born on 11 September 1982 in Dehradun and grew up in Haridwar. Her father, Pushpendra Saran, was a civil engineer, and her mother, Neerja Saran, taught chemistry at a school. She completed her schooling at Delhi Public School, Haridwar, before pursuing higher studies at Lady Shri Ram College for Women in Delhi.
Apart from academics, Shriya was deeply passionate about dancing. She trained in Kathak and Rajasthani folk dance from a young age and even learned under renowned dance guru Shovana Narayan. This strong background in classical dance later shaped her acting career.
