Pregnancy is a remarkable journey filled with joy and anticipation. It is also can be a challenging time due to all of the changes that your body is doing through. Amidst the excitement and changes, it’s crucial for expectant mothers to prioritize their oral health. Many changes occur during pregnancy that can impact dental health, making proper dental care an essential part of prenatal care. Dentists are trained on how to help expecting mothers and those that are successful will have dental accounting to bill your insurance for you. Below we will explore the importance of dental care for expectant mothers, discuss common oral health concerns during pregnancy, and provide tips for maintaining a healthy smile throughout this beautiful phase of life.

Hormonal Changes and Oral Health

Pregnancy triggers a surge in hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, which can affect oral health amongst other things. These hormonal changes can increase the risk of oral health problems like gum disease, gingivitis, and pregnancy tumors. Regular dental check-ups and maintaining good oral hygiene practices are crucial during pregnancy to prevent or manage these conditions. After pregnancy, it is not uncommon to have a dental appointment and find that your teeth have dramatically changed during pregnancy.

Morning Sickness and Dental Health

If you have ever been pregnant, you know that there is a high chance that you will experience morning sickness at some point during pregnancy. Typically it will involve vomiting and increased acidity in the mouth. The stomach acids can erode tooth enamel and increase the likelihood of dental decay. Rinsing the mouth with water or a fluoridated mouthwash after vomiting, using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and choosing toothpaste with mild flavors can help protect tooth enamel during this sensitive time. There is not much that can be done to prevent this, but taking care of your teeth after vomiting is important.

Dental Procedures During Pregnancy

Dental treatments and procedures can often be safely performed during pregnancy, although it is essential to inform your dentist about your pregnancy. Routine dental cleanings, fillings, and even necessary dental X-rays can be performed with appropriate safety precautions. However, elective treatments and major procedures are often best postponed until after delivery to minimize any potential risks. No matter what stage of your pregnancy you are in, it is crucial that you tell your dentist of your pregnancy so that they are aware and can take extra precautions when needed.

Oral Hygiene Practices for Expectant Mothers

Maintaining a consistent oral hygiene routine is crucial throughout pregnancy. Brushing your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and using an antimicrobial mouth rinse can help control plaque and prevent gum disease. If morning sickness makes brushing your teeth challenging, try using a bland-tasting toothpaste or consider rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash. Even if you are not feeling well or in the trenches of pregnancy, it is vital that you take care of your teeth so that you dont have consequences after your pregnancy.
